At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, a student pulled the fire alarm outside a classroom. Out of an abundance of caution, all students and staff safely exited the buildings in accordance with established emergency procedures. Staff promptly and thoroughly cleared all classrooms to ensure no individuals remained inside. Once the situation was determined to be safe, students and staff returned to their classrooms and normal instruction resumed without further incident.

Early yesterday morning, a devastating fire occurred in Westmorland. Thankfully, no lives were lost and no students were displaced. However, the fire destroyed our local community food pantry, which is housed at the Presbyterian Church and serves over 100 families each week. Unfortunately, all food supplies stored inside were also lost in the fire.
At this time, the Westmorland Community Food Pantry is asking for support from our community. Donations of non-perishable food items may be dropped off at Westmorland Elementary School. Monetary donations may also be made through the pantry’s website below. No donation is too small, and every contribution will help support local families in need.

We also checked the junior high classrooms that were in the closest proximity to the fire and there is no smell of smoke in the classrooms. However, maintenance staff will be changing all AC filters on the junior high campus tomorrow before students arrive.
Electricity remains on, and school will be open tomorrow, Monday, May 18, 2026.
Westmorland Union Elementary School District would like to inform our parents and community that there was a fire in Westmorland that affected an abandoned house and the Westmorland Presbyterian Church, specifically the hall and food pantry.
We are thankful to report that no damage was sustained to Westmorland Elementary School. Ms. Chaidez, our M&O Supervisor, inspected the school and confirmed that there was no damage. Electricity remains on, and school will be open tomorrow, Monday, May 18, 2026.
Our thoughts are with the Westmorland Presbyterian Church family during this difficult time. WUESD will be supporting their Food Bank this Thursday as they recover from this incident.
We know the Westmorland community is strong and united like a family, and we will continue to support one another in any way we can.
If there are any changes or additional updates, we will inform our families and community as soon as possible.
